Transport In Edinburgh

Edinburgh provides excellent and efficient transport services around the city and further afield. With a local bus service, residents can travel easily around the city. In the heart of Edinburgh, there are two main railway stations and a bus station providing services all over the UK. Edinburgh Airport is also available a short distance from the city centre.

Edinburgh Airport is situated in the area of Turnhouse, 5.8 miles west of Edinburgh City Centre, just off the M8 Motorway. Services from Edinburgh Airport offer international flights and local flights within the UK. Edinburgh Airport is easily accessible for passengers, Lothian Buses provide excellent public transportation to the airport via the Airlink 100 express. As well as this, there are also short stay and long stay car parks available nearby to the airport.

Edinburgh Waverly Train Station is Edinburgh’s main railway station and is situated in the city centre. The station is one of the busiest in Scotland and provides services travelling west to Glasgow and Stirling, north to Fife, Dundee, Perth, Aberdeen and Inverness, as well as services travelling south to England including London’s Kings Cross Station. To the west of Edinburgh City Centre lies Haymarket Railway Station, trains from this station serve much of Scotland and down the east coast of England.

Within the city of Edinburgh, the excellent council run Lothian Bus Service provides buses travelling locally across Edinburgh and through the city centre offering a flat fare system. Lothian Buses also provide the Airlink 100 service to Edinburgh Airport, as well as a Night Bus Service allowing continuous 24 hour bus services to some areas of the city. The majority of these buses are now equipped with low entrances, lowering to kerb height, as well as a ramp to assist wheelchair users and a dedicated area for wheelchairs and children’s push chairs is provided.

In the heart of Edinburgh, situated in St Andrew Square is Edinburgh Bus Station which provides a range of services all over Scotland and the rest of the UK.

There are fantastic Park and Ride facilities available on the outskirts of the city, including Ingliston, Hermiston, Newcraighall and Fife. This is a very successful scheme providing large surface car parks and bus services which transport passengers into the city centre, therefore cutting down congestion dramatically.
